So you want to know who I am? Here is a detailed autobiography written in the third person. The autobiography has no doubt left details out. Daniel was born in Odense, Denmark, the quaint hometown of the famous fairy tale writer, Hans Christian Andersen, on April 28th, 1982. There he spent his first few months before immigrating to Canada with his family. Upon arriving in Canada, Daniel's family settled in a community called Chilliwack where he spent most of his life growing up. Although Daniel did not grow up on a farm, Chilliwack was at the time very much an agricultural community, and Daniel enjoyed many of the pleasures of country living. At the age of five Daniel entered Kindergarten without being able to speak a word of English, and he did not really start to speak English in any decent manner until reaching the second grade. Daniel had grown up speaking Danish with his family and had not gone to preschool. Elementary school was a new and scary experience for him. Daniel was so scared of school, that when his kindergarten school teacher came to visit him he actually hid under the bed and would not come out. As the years progressed Daniel not only became a better speaker of the English language, he became more social. Daniel had a strong social network of friends and in grade six, and he even made it on to his school's basketball team. It would, however, be the only sports team he would ever play with on a regular basis. In 1994, Daniel attended Rosedale Middle School. Grade Seven was a wonderful year for Daniel. He discovered girls and girls discovered him. However, when Daniel was asked out by who he considered to be the hottest girl in the school, he was too shy to answer her. She eventually started to think that Daniel did not like her and nothing ever happened between the two. Middle School was filled with three years of some good memories and a lot of memories that would be worth forgetting about. The good memories included new friends, getting good grades and having fun. The memories that Daniel would rather forget about included being hit by a flying container of chocolate pudding and sitting in gum. During his time at Middle School, Daniel became known for two things. For the first half of his time at Middle School, Daniel was obsessed with weather. This obsession developed because one of Daniel's friends had an obsession with dinosaurs, and Daniel felt that he needed his own obsession. Three times a day Daniel would record the weather and put together a forecast using his own weather station in his backyard. Friends and family would at times say that he was just as reliable, if not more accurate, than the Weather Network or Environment Canada. During the second part of Middle School, Daniel became famous for his lunch hour ritual that even earned him a spot in the yearbook. Every single day for the entire school year, Daniel had his own spot in the school cafeteria with the same can of Dr. Pepper and popcorn. In the year 1997, Daniel started attending Chilliwack Senior Secondary School. Going from a rural Middle School to a semi-urban high school environment was very stressful for Daniel, but he quickly made new friends. He also found a girl who he had a crush on for his entire three years at the school. Unfortunately for Daniel, he did not find out that she also liked him until the very last day of school. In 1998, Daniel got his driver's license, which meant more freedom. By this time, Chilliwack was becoming too small for Daniel - he wanted out. In 1998, Daniel's parents sent him to Denmark to help him keep his connections to his homeland. Although only being 16, and having been told not to, Daniel developed a strong taste for alcoholic drinks in Denmark. He also enjoyed things like participating in mock Viking battles and meeting all of his family. Upon returning from Denmark, Daniel wanted to emigrate to Denmark. This yearning eventually dissipated. In the summer of 2000, Daniel moved to Victoria, BC. The first place that he lived was literally a rat hole. He came back one year after Christmas and found that there were rats in the place. The place was already infested with all kinds of insects, but rats were the straw that broke the camel's back. Following the rat infestation, it only took Daniel four days to find another place to live. The new place he found was large, inexpensive and cozy. He stayed there for over three years. During his university years, Daniel redeveloped a taste for alcohol and learned how to dance "properly." Daniel also had his first serious relationship with a very sweet girl from BC's Kootenays. In the fall of 2000, Daniel purchased a car from a friend. It was a great deal, but a deal that he would also regret many times over. Since purchasing the car, enough money has been invested in the car to have bought a new car many times over. Beyond this there have been many embarrassing incidents with the car, which eventually came to be known as "Special K" since it was a 1989 Plymouth Reliant K-car. Incidents with the car included frequent breakdowns, strange noises and even one car fire! Daniel's reason for moving to Victoria was not only to get away from Chilliwack, but also to continue his education at the University of Victoria. While at the University of Victoria, Daniel slowly, but surely, became active in politics and activism. He joined a political party and eventually even became a co-chair of the local chapter of that political club. Later he went on to be elected to the UVic Students' Society where he would serve as a Director. Daniel was influential in many of the actions of the students' society. In 2004, Daniel completed university with a "Bachelor of Science Double Major in Computer Science with an emphasis on Software Engineering and a major in Political Science." Because Daniel took no breaks, he got through this program in a very quick 3 years and 4 months. Normally the program takes 4 or more years. Following this, Daniel was unemployed for about three months. The problem was not really necessarily finding a job, but it was more along the lines of finding a decent job. Eventually, Daniel was offered a job as a pre-election organizer for a federal political party. He took this job, but had to work his ASS off in it. After only two months in this position, Daniel left to become a "Community Leadership Organizer" with the Columbia Institute based out of Vancouver, British Columbia. The Columbia Institute is a subordinate of the Canadian Labour Congress. In his new position Daniel received two weeks of intense non-profit training. He was then sent to Seattle to work with an organization called ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now). ACORN is supposed to function as a lobbying group for positive change for low income individuals. While this may be true to a point, Daniel found that the organization had many flaws while he was there. During the first half of his time in Seattle, Daniel went door-to-door asking low income individuals to become members of ACORN at $10 per month, and he also went door-to-door asking high-income individuals to donate. Daniel did not enjoy this activity, and given his lack of support for ACORN, he did not feel good about doing it. One day Daniel decided that he would quit. He went to talk to his supervisors, and after a short talk he decided to stay on, but he would be reassigned. For the next month and a half following this, Daniel ended up working on a class action lawsuit against Wells Fargo Financial bank for predatory lending. His most extreme experience with this involved meeting a woman who had borrowed about $100,000 for a mortgage. With interest and the fees charged to her, she was going to pay about $420,000 over 30 years! To make matters worse, she had negotiated the loan without telling her husband because she wanted to surprise him with a good deal. While this was a bad story, there were many other similar examples. In most cases, the victims had failed to shop around or failed to read the fine print -- although there were also examples where the fine print was not presented or even changed! After three months in Seattle, Daniel returned to Canada where he worked for a little over three months with Get Your Vote On. Get Your Vote On is a non-partisan project to encourage more young people between the ages of 18 and 34 to vote! It wants to register 20,000 new voters before the May 17th election in British Columbia in 2004. During this project, Daniel enjoyed visiting various campuses to do outreach to new voters. Daniel's position at Get Your Vote On eventually led him to work at Elections BC as a youth liaison for all of British Columbia. While at Elections BC, Daniel engaged in many activities geared towards increasing youth voter turnout. It is very likely that Daniel's work, and the hard work of Elections BC was a major contributing factor to an 8% increase in youth voter turnout in the May, 2005 election from the previous election. During his time at Elections BC, Daniel made many friends and greatly improved many skills. It was also during his time at Elections BC that he met his current girlfriend, Yu. Their relationship has been going very well since then. In September, 2005, Daniel moved to Calgary after being accepted at the University of Calgary's Law School. Law school was a goal that Daniel had dreamt of for at least three years previously. While his heart eventually warmed to Calgary, his girlfriend, the landscape and the weather were factors that urged him to go back to British Columbia. Having lived other places, places like Chilliwack did not seem so bad anymore! In February, 2006, Daniel and Yu went on an awesome trip together to Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon. Besides eating too much at buffets, many great pictures were taken, and far too much money was spent! You may be surprised to hear, though, that during our entire stay in Las Vegas, we spent only about $20 on gambling! Following a successful completion of his first year of law school, Daniel returned to Victoria, British Columbia. Unable to find a legal job in Victoria, Daniel spent his summer working retail and doing landscaping. Having two jobs was stressful; at times Daniel would work 12 hour days by working 6 hours in the morning at one job and then another 6 hours in the evening at another job. During the Summer off 2006, Daniel transferred to the law school at the University of Victoria. In August, 2006, Daniel traveled to Japan. There he visited Yu's family in Tokyo and his cousin in Osaka. During his time in Japan, he traveled widely. He spent time in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagano, and Yamanashi. There he tried many new varieties of food and he slowly improved his Japanese. The most unique (and apparently the most dangerous) food he tried was chicken liver sashimi. In September, 2006, Daniel commenced studies at the law school at the University of Victoria. In the Summer of 2007 Daniel worked at a mid-sized law firm in British Columbia's Lower Mainland. Daniel will graduate from law school in April, 2008. Questions? E-mail me! |
