Getting Drunk - A pastime past its time.

May 28, 2005

This weekend I have consumed what I believe is too much alcohol. But why do people even get drunk? This perplexes me. I can see the odd drink because many hard beverages also have great taste.

To celebrate my last day of work, I had drinks with coworkers. Every time my glass was empty it just got filled again. The result was a massive hangover the following morning. To make matters worse all day I had a pounding headache. My headache ended in the evening when I started to get more alcohol from wine. Although not the case, I was fearful that my headache condition could lead to a dependency on alcohol -- was alcohol both the cause of and the solution to my headache??? This morning I woke up with yet another headache.

The alcohol I consumed made me feel sick. I got a pounding hangover headache. Besides taste, there was no benefit from the alcohol that I could not have received without alcohol. Socializing with friends? No alcohol needed! Having snacks? No alcoholic needed! Laughs? No alcohol needed! etc. etc. etc.

This leaves me deeply perplexed by the number of people who actually drink to get drunk. What is the point? They are causing themselves pain. They are distracting themselves from reality. Alcohol can cause death, especially when mixed with driving. Alcohol weakens you ability to make decisions and renders your social skills deficient. On top of this, excessive alcohol has been proven to cause many different diseases and ailments.

My point is, drinking is okay -- drinking too much, or drinking with the intent of getting drunk is utterly stupid. Don't do it! There are so many other things that people can do for entertainment and enjoyment.
