Intelligent Life -- out there? In here?

Sunday November 07, 2004

The universe is filled with countless spatial entities – planets, stars, quasars etc. Surely in what seems infinite to our eyes, there is a chance – a good chance – that there is some kind of life form out there – probably even an intelligent life form somewhere.

Earlier this week it was announced that a new species of human was found in Indonesia. (See http://www.guardian.co.uk/life/science/story/0,12996,1340665,00.html and http://www.rednova.com/news/display/?id=98845 ). This species is more recent than any previous species. Furthermore, it has been found that the brain of this human was much smaller, but not of less intellectual significance, than the brains of current humans. This prompts me to ask, next time when we look "out there" for intelligent life, is it possible that we really should also be looking "in here." After all, there are still plenty of areas to be explored and re-explored here on earth and we are still discovering new types of animals, plants and bacteria right here on earth!

So does intelligent life exist? The truth is out there... and here.
